reasons you need to stop bragging about your “perfect grammar and spelling”
-it’s probably nowhere close to perfect, not even by your standards
-you sound like a fucking brat
-language evolves; or, as my favorite linguistics professor used to…
Woah woah woah woah.
Hold the motherfucking phone a second here.
Ableist, Classist AND racist?
Are you fucking KIDDING me?
Look, skippy, the only reason I have such a high vocabulary is (listen close) because my family knew I loved learning. They took me to the library and got me books that the public education system wouldn’t let me read because it was ‘too advanced’ even though my reading comprehension level was several grades ahead of my peers.
We never had tons of money to use or throw around. And I may be white but I sure as fuck didn’t grow up in a place where that was catered to. Hell, it was a bad thing where I grew up. Sure I wasn’t getting out and out attacked in the street, but I wasn’t really allowed out by myself as a child, for fear of that I’d be attacked or kidnapped.
I don’t correct every grammar mistake and spelling error I see, unless a person and I have already discussed “Yes, I would like help learning to spell certain big words so please correct me if I misspell it.” and even then I won’t rub their noses in it. I’ll just say whatever I was gonna say, then tack on an asterisk with the proper spelling of their word. Not to mention that sometimes I make a typo too. I’m only human. When I am sleepy, not fully awake, in pain or sick, I am definitely more likely to make a typo. When I’m intoxicated? Word orgy! Letters everywhere. But yeah, that’s normal. That’s human.
For fuck’s sake. Not everything is offensive. Don’t take away the last joy I have, damn it. Society’s already given me a massive inferiority complex. Let me keep my last treasure of writing and linguistics. PLEASE.
Edit: After reading this to someone else, they recommended I added letting the original poster know that their viewpoint is, in fact, what is racist. It’s fucked up to assume that only one ethnicity is capable of proper grammar and spelling, as much as it is fucked up to assume that the handicapped or poor won’t have proper spelling and grammar. If you’ve got not a lot else, I can tell you for a FACT that producing something quality - even if it’s just words on a paper - is a fucking achievement to be PROUD OF.
Hi there! Congrats on being that 1 in every 200th person who missed the damn point.
It’s great that you love language and linguistics, but I study linguistics in grad school, and that love is actually what prompted me to write this post in the first place.
Linguistic prescriptivism is racist and classist because linguistic prescriptivism venerates so-called Standard English above other dialects, many of which are spoken by non-white and/or low-income people. For example, prescriptivists will generally say that usages in AAVE are incorrect, despite them being perfectly acceptable in that dialect. Prejudice against non-standard usages can affect employment opportunities, how people are treated by their teachers, etc, and it’s a common feature of racist, classist, and xenophobic diatribes. That you honestly think I’m suggesting that “only one ethnicity is capable of proper grammar and spelling” just shows how unqualified you are to vomit all over this post.
By all means, keep learning and foster your love of language, but don’t be an elitist. That’s literally all I was saying. You can be proud of your accomplishments, just don’t be an asshole to others.
And honestly? As far as the not-being-an-asshole thing is concerned, you’re not off to a good start.
can i jump in? like the other poster i was brought up in poverty and got lots of books from the library including lots which where not in standard english. initially i wanted books in my own dialect but soon became interested in other dialects from my country, literature which tried to represent these dialects phonetically and then in dialects from other cultural and racial groups.
there is no ‘correct’ english, it is just a dialect like all the others.
